North Rustico and Charlottetown

June 15, 2022

I love traveling in the northern countries this time of year! The sun rises about five and sets well past nine, and the light lingers in the sky until 11:00. The challenge for photography is getting out for those very early “golden hours” at sunrise and sunset. I am always grateful for Kitty’s indulgence as I chase these elusive hours.

Today we were up at 5:30 for a quick cup of coffee and leftover muffin and out of the door at 6:00, not early enough for the sunrise, but early enough to capture morning light in North Rustico.

On the way back to the cottage we stopped to spend an hour or so walking the Confederation Trail. This runs along the old railroad beds of the island and covers most of the interior. It’s known for its Geocaching, and we set out intending to track some down.

The reality was harsher than we would have expected from this gentle island. Kitty was alerted to nearby caches several times, but they all called for a steep decline down the railbed grade, a move often complicated by poison ivy. She still pursued some when they were more accessible, but we had no success today. There’s always tomorrow.

Today was Kitty’s class at the Culinary Institute in Charlottetown, so we headed over there about noon. Kitty will be telling the story of “Culinary Bootcamp” in another post. I dropped her off and set off to explore the city. A cruise ship had landed, so the streets were active.

I found a great spot for lunch under trees at The Gallery and chatted with a man who’d lived happily in Charlottetown since the early 1970’s.

I wandered around the town until about 4:00 when I went back to the Culinary Institute to wait for Kitty, who was done by 5:00.

She came out exhausted bearing a big grocery bag full of her creations. We enjoyed lobster and crab tomato chowder with her home-made Buttery Potato Split Top Rolls for dinner. Absolutely delicious!
