Old Quebec City

On Sunday we decide to venture into Old Town. Given our experience climbing hills on our first day, we decide to see what public transportation might afford. We made it to a pharmacy to buy bus passes (about 30 USD apiece for 5 days), and then headed for the nearest bus. We just missed the… Continue reading Old Quebec City

Arriving Quebec City, Saint-Roch Neighborhood

We wake up early, finish final chores and drag our bags up the hill to the train station. It’s a doable walk and I was glad we’d taken the time yesterday to find the best route. I realize I’m used to European 19th century behemoth train stations, and Montreal station has a relatively modest profile. We’d… Continue reading Arriving Quebec City, Saint-Roch Neighborhood

Last Day Montreal

It’s Thursday September 14th and we ride the train tomorrow to Quebec. That means all the anxiety of packing, cleaning up and getting ready.  But meanwhile we have a whole day and we want to make the best of it.   After scoping out our route to the train station for tomorrow we stop at the Crew… Continue reading Last Day Montreal

Museum of Fine Arts, Soup Dumplings & Old Port

We woke up to rain and a gray sky.  The plan was for a museum on a rainy day, so after a grocery store run, we headed uptown on the subway.  The Montreal museum of Fine Arts is huge but we found our way to the Modernist section pretty quickly.  I enjoyed the description of a Picasso (Embrace,… Continue reading Museum of Fine Arts, Soup Dumplings & Old Port

Little Italy, Mont Royal Plateau & Botanical Gardens

On Monday morning we bought 3-day transportation passes and set off for Marche Jean Talon on the Metro. Our apartment is close to Victoria Station, so it was an easy ride on the Orange line. The Metro is notably clean and calming compared to most. Announcements are in French but clear, and the trains are… Continue reading Little Italy, Mont Royal Plateau & Botanical Gardens

Bonjour Montréal!

What fun to be traveling again! Taking care of outstanding chores before leaving is always a bitch: paying bills, managing appointments, communicating with friends and professionals, buying shoes and clothes, not to mention cleaning the stove fan vents, changing the bulbs in the overhead lights and downing the spider webs. And then there’s the yardwork.… Continue reading Bonjour Montréal!

Travel Advice for the Barcelona Bound

This past summer Kitty and I have spoken to several friends & acquaintances who are planning trips to Barcelona. Those conversations have prompted us to add this entry, intended for those who are planning a Barcelona trip and seeking recommendations for independent travel. Along with Barcelona blogs on this WordPress site, our earlier Blogger site… Continue reading Travel Advice for the Barcelona Bound

Home Again, Home Again: Reflections on Our Month in Barcelona

We had good luck on our return trip: made all our connections, breezed through customs and even arrived a few minutes early in Asheville. Still, the long day with three connections and the normal stresses of travel were enough to wear us out. I think that all Lorena’s planning really paid off.  We had enough… Continue reading Home Again, Home Again: Reflections on Our Month in Barcelona

Parks 2

Barcelona’s parks continue to attract us with their quiet spaces, city views, statuary, flora and fauna. There are always birds and dogs, and the Mediterranean plants are largely different and diverse. Even the small parks often have dog parks and children’s play area. The building below is a youth center.

Girona

For years our friends have told us what a beautiful city Girona is. It’s about 1.5 hours north from Barcelona by local train and an hour with express, but until now we’ve never made the trek. One of the things about having an entire month is the permission it allows for a day away from… Continue reading Girona
