New Glasgow Lobster Supper

June 14, 2022

Nature says stop.  We have had solid hard rain all day.  Time to rest.  But meals do carry on.  We start at 8:00 am with our farm breakfast that we arranged upon arrival.  What a feast.  Fresh blueberry muffins, yoghurt, granola, fresh egg quiche, homemade bread, current jam and bacon.

Now we have met some of the pigs and it was pointed out that pigs meant for consumption do not get names.  I enjoy the bacon and wonder if I had personally known the pig how would that change my perceptions.  Oh well, not ready to become a vegetarian yet.

We spend the day reading and napping.  The rain is relentless and comes in heavy bands.  We eat a light lunch in anticipation of our Lobster Supper meal.

Lobster suppers seem to be a PEI tradition.  Near our cottage we have the New Glasgow Lobster Supper.  It was started in the 50’s as a fundraiser for farmers but by the 70s it had become a business for a group of families.  It is a curious blend of cafeteria, church supper and all you can eat.  I kept thinking “my father would have loved this.”  You walk in and pick your entrée (lobster, scallops, haddock) but the appetizers, sides and desserts are a set menu and served all you can eat.  Of course, for our entrée we chose lobsters- 1.5-pound ones.

They start with warm homemade yeast rolls.  You next choose between cream clam chowder or tomato based.  We choose the white and it was rich and thick with tons of clams. Next, they bring out a bowl of mussels.  The mussels are local, plump and delicious.  Service is nothing fancy- the bucket for shells is plastic Tupperware.  I thought from reading on the Web that you choose between the soup and the mussels.  Lorena remarked, “We think we know what we are doing but we don’t.” I thought we picked between potatoes salad, slaw and garden salad.  But they brought out all three on a single plate.

We tried to pace ourselves because the bread, mussels and soup would have been enough.  But wait- here comes the lobster.  The place mat gives us directions on how to eat the lobster but the restaurant kindly cracks the shells to make extracting the meat easier.  What fun dipping the fresh lobster in the drawn butter.  Lorena’s lobster has roe and I enjoy being brave and eating it.  We have enough to take home for tomorrow.  I have fresh eggs from the farm.  Lobster omelet?

Oh, by the time dessert rolled around we were both so full.  Lorena got ice cream and I got strawberry short cake.  What a total feast. Lorena and I have been reading about his experience for years.  What fun to have actually done it.

    1. We are! I remember we ate seafood here with the same ferocity in 2011, but rarely indulged in the interim. I think this trip we’ve satisfied our lobster itch for another ten years or so!
