Montague, Murray River, Panmure and Wood Islands

17 June 2022

Hard to believe this is our last day!  We wake up early and get going with chores: organizing, packing, cleaning.  The wind is blowing hard and it has grown colder. How hard does the wind have to blow before they cancel the ferry?  We decide to go with flow and see what happens. We are nothing if not relaxed after six days here on PEI.

We drive to the eastern part of the island and stop at Montague.  We haven’t yet eaten at a “Tim Horton’s,” an every-present Canadian fast food place with coffee and doughnuts. We realize later we’ve missed the very cool café Joyce had recommended for Timmy’s. Oh well. We see a sign for a petting zoo. We push on to Panmure island. Lorena says, “I had marked this for you Kitty.”  It is a bit weird with homemade signs, an eccentric owner and animals seemingly desperate for food.  I enjoy the interaction but hope we have not arrived at one of those abusive road-side attractions. It feels like The Tiger King but with small farmyard animals.

We move on to Panmure island.  Lorena yells “stop!”  It is a field with horses, the sea and a light house.  A photographer’s delight.  She is so happy with the results and the friendly horses who seem happy to pose.

We get to the ferry with time to spare.  It is a large ship–bigger than what we know from Ocracoke.  It is very festive and COVID seems like a dream. Here they make you leave your cars and go to common areas. The majority swarm the grill. There are just a few folks still wearing masks, including us.

Once off the ferry we have a couple of hours to get to our hotel near the Halifax airport.  The 1.5 drive to the hotel is hard in the rain, but we manage, drop off the car and find the shuttle that takes us back to our room. We luxuriate in the space and comfort and dine on cheese and crackers and PEI wine.

Tomorrow is the airport ant flying home.  What a trip! We are so happy and grateful it has all gone so well. We’ll see what tomorrow brings!
