Here We Go Again!

Kitty and I wanted to alert our followers of our pending travels to Madrid. We’ll leave tomorrow (Jan 9) and will be gone for five weeks, and plan to keep up a regular travel blog starting the end of the week.

We’ve rented an Airbnb apartment in the Chamberí district, north of the old city center but near Western Park. The neighborhood is easily connected to the main sites with public transportation, and perhaps most important, it is a gastronomic center of the city. We’re not indulging in any $$$$ or Michelin star eateries on this trip. Our expectation is that we can eat quality food at affordable prices, so expect lots of tapas.

Our itinerary reflects our preferences and styles: we are not into Flamenco or nightlife, but we can wander the streets and parks for hours. Photography is my main passion when traveling, and I love learning the history, culture, and art of new places. Kitty is also into discovery, but her focus is food: restaurants, shopping for food, cooking new dishes. She’s exploring options for a cooking class. We have one day trip (Segovia) and an overnight trip (Toledo) planned at this point. It’s always hard to anticipate what might capture our imagination in a new city, so our itinerary has lots of open spaces.

We hope you’ll follow along. If you’ve been to Madrid, please share any recommendations! Likewise, please feel free to share this site (lorenalrussell.com) with anyone who might enjoy the armchair experience or is planning future travels.

  1. Toledo is awesome. There is an El Greco museum three worth the admission. So much art in Madrid! Prada, Reina Sofia, Thyssen-Bornemisza. And we got churros at Chocolatería San Ginés twice! Enjoy!!

    1. We are looking forward to Toledo and the more we read, the happier we are we’ve planned an overnight. I enjoy El Greco and hope to view several of the sites there as well the big three and maybe even Sorolla. We will have to indulge in San Ginés!

  2. We loved Madrid! If I can find the menu for a wine bar we found I’ll let you know! Thyssen Museum is interesting but clearly a private collection. They do have a fabulous portrait of him by Freud. Prado is of course to die for! Never made it to the Picasso museum, not a fan of his work. Should’ve gone if for no other reason to see Guernica.

    Have fun!
