Kitty & I conceived this trip last winter: we wanted to return to Nova Scotia, but were struggling with the thought of leaving our dog, Pip. The solution: drive to Canada! The trip took five days of travel averaging five hours a day, and we stayed an extra day in Dobb’s Ferry, NY to visit cousin Gay.

Our destination is intentionally remote: Guysborough is a small village on the north side of the Eastern Shore, quite close to Cape Breton. It’s historic and charming, though it also suffers from economic woes as indicated by the number of closed businesses on Main Street. But there is enough here to suit our needs: a decent grocery store, an NSLC for wine and abundant walking trails in pristine boreal woodlands. We’ve been here for two days now, and it’s clear from reviewing our photos that Pip really is front and center to our experiences. It’s also clear that my hopes to find a locale that might relieve that political anxiety that haunts me in the US, and this is it.

Posts from here will review our drive from Asheville, NC to Guysborough, NS. We’ll be in Guysborough for 3 weeks before returning home via New Brunswick and Quebec, where we’ve planned a two-day stop in Knowlton (the real source of Penny’s “Three Pines”) and Niagara Falls. Our audience is primarily friends and family, though we also try to offer enough information to help anyone planning a similar trip to the great province of Nova Scotia. Please feel free to offer comments or pose questions.

Sounds like a great trip so far. I love road trips and understand the dog issue. I’m no longer wanting to travel without my older dog Henry unless Jason is home with him,
